Protein Powder & Shakes
Standard whey or plant-based protein powders from reputable brands are generally fine in moderation, but it's worth checking with your midwife or GP, particularly for added ingredients some products include that aren't recommended in pregnancy.
Protein powders and shakes are not off-limits during pregnancy, but they deserve more care than most whole foods, because supplement products are far less tightly regulated than food and can vary widely in what else they contain. A straightforward whey, casein, or plant-based (pea, soy, rice) protein powder used occasionally to supplement a meal is generally considered acceptable in moderation. The concerns are twofold. First, some protein powders and 'meal replacement' shake products are fortified with high doses of vitamins and minerals — particularly vitamin A — which can add up to more than is recommended in pregnancy if combined with a prenatal vitamin and a normal diet. Second, some products marketed for muscle building or weight loss contain additional ingredients such as high caffeine doses, herbal extracts, or other compounds that are not well studied or recommended in pregnancy. The safest approach is to check the ingredients label carefully, choose a simple, minimally fortified product, and mention regular protein powder use to your midwife or GP, particularly if you use it daily rather than occasionally. Getting protein from whole foods — meat, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes, and tofu — remains the most straightforward and lowest-risk approach, with protein powder as an occasional addition rather than a primary source.
What to be aware of
- Choose a simple whey or plant protein powder with minimal added vitamins, minerals, or herbal extracts.
- Avoid products marketed for weight loss or pre-workout use, which may contain high caffeine or unstudied ingredients.
- Mention regular protein powder or shake use to your midwife or GP.
- Whole food protein sources remain the lowest-risk primary choice.
