Lucozade
Lucozade is safe to drink during pregnancy. The original glucose-based Lucozade Energy and Lucozade Sport are caffeine-free — just watch the sugar content and check the label if you pick up a "Lucozade Caffeine" variant.
Cross-checked against NHS guidance

Lucozade is a glucose-based soft drink, and the original Lucozade Energy (the orange one) and Lucozade Sport range are both caffeine-free, making them safe to drink throughout pregnancy. There's no pregnancy-specific restriction on glucose or the other ingredients in the standard range. The two things worth knowing: first, sugar content is high — a 380ml bottle of Lucozade Energy Original contains around 51g of sugar, so it's worth treating as an occasional drink rather than a regular one, and something to be more mindful of if you've been advised to watch your sugar intake for gestational diabetes. Second, Lucozade also sells a "Lucozade Caffeine" variant (and some Lucozade Sport flavours contain caffeine too) with around 65mg of caffeine per 380ml bottle — about the same as a can of cola — which is fine in moderation but does count toward the NHS-recommended 200mg daily caffeine limit from all sources combined, so check the label rather than assuming any Lucozade is caffeine-free. Some people also know Lucozade as the glucose drink associated with the oral glucose tolerance test (GTT) used to screen for gestational diabetes — the test itself uses a specific measured glucose solution provided by the clinic, not a shop-bought bottle, but the association isn't a coincidence; it's the same basic ingredient.
What to be aware of
- Original Lucozade Energy and Lucozade Sport are caffeine-free and safe throughout pregnancy.
- Check the label for "Lucozade Caffeine" or caffeinated Sport flavours — these contain around 65mg of caffeine per bottle, which counts toward your 200mg daily limit.
- Sugar content is high (around 51g per 380ml bottle of the original) — fine occasionally, but not a replacement for water as a regular drink, especially if you're managing gestational diabetes.
Safe substitutes for Lucozade during pregnancy
If you're craving lucozade but it's off the menu for now, these are safe swaps that still feel like a proper meal:
- Water — The safest everyday choice for hydration, with no sugar or caffeine to think about.
- Diluted fruit juice (pasteurised) — A lighter-sugar way to get a bit of natural sweetness and vitamin C.
- Rehydration sachets (e.g. Dioralyte) — A better option than a sugary drink specifically for rehydration during vomiting or sickness — ask your midwife or pharmacist.
US guidance
Lucozade isn't widely sold in the US — the closest equivalents are glucose/electrolyte drinks like Gatorade or Powerade, which carry the same basic considerations: fine in moderation, caffeine-free in their standard forms, and high enough in sugar to treat as occasional rather than everyday.
