Pregnancy guidance, in plain English

Coconut

Coconut in all its forms — flesh, milk, water, oil, and desiccated coconut — is safe throughout pregnancy.

Safe to eat

Coconut is safe to eat during pregnancy in every common form: fresh coconut flesh, desiccated or shredded coconut, coconut milk, coconut cream, coconut oil used in cooking, and coconut water. Coconut water has become popular during pregnancy as a hydrating drink, and it is safe, though it is not a special or necessary addition — plain water remains just as effective for hydration, and coconut water does contain natural sugars and calories worth being aware of if drunk in large quantities. Coconut milk and cream are commonly used in curries, soups, and desserts and are fine in normal cooking amounts. As with any food, if you have never eaten coconut before and are trying it for the first time, be aware that tree nut allergies can occasionally extend to coconut, though botanically it is a fruit rather than a tree nut and cross-reactivity is uncommon. There is no pregnancy-specific reason to limit coconut in any form.

What to be aware of

  • All forms of coconut — flesh, milk, cream, oil, water, desiccated — are safe.
  • Coconut water is a pleasant hydrating drink but not a necessary substitute for plain water.
  • If trying coconut for the first time and you have other food allergies, introduce it cautiously.
