Listeria in Pregnancy: Why It's the Main Food Safety Concern
What Listeria is, why it matters so much more in pregnancy than other bacteria, and the practical steps that reduce your risk day to day.
If you’ve read much pregnancy food guidance, you’ll have noticed one bacterium comes up again and again: Listeria. It’s the single biggest reason behind advice to avoid soft mould-ripened cheese, unpasteurised dairy, pre-packed salads left too long, and certain deli meats. Understanding why it gets singled out helps make sense of guidance that can otherwise feel arbitrary.
What Makes Listeria Different
Most foodborne bacteria — Salmonella, Campylobacter, E. coli — are killed by refrigeration or at least stop multiplying at fridge temperatures. Listeria monocytogenes is unusual because it can survive and slowly multiply even in a properly cold refrigerator (around 4°C). This means food that looks, smells, and tastes completely normal can still carry a growing bacterial load if it’s the kind of food Listeria favours and it’s been stored for a while.
Listeria infection (listeriosis) is also rare in the general population and often causes mild or no symptoms in healthy adults. In pregnancy, though, the immune system is naturally somewhat suppressed to avoid rejecting the baby, making pregnant women around 10 times more likely to contract listeriosis than the general population — and the consequences can be serious, including miscarriage, stillbirth, or severe illness in a newborn, even when the mother’s own symptoms are mild (often flu-like: fever, muscle aches, sometimes nausea).
Why Certain Foods Are Flagged
Listeria thrives in foods with a combination of high moisture, low acidity, and refrigerated storage — this is why the “avoid” list clusters around specific food types rather than being random:
- Soft, mould-ripened cheeses (Brie, Camembert) and soft blue cheeses (Gorgonzola) — their high moisture rind supports Listeria growth. Hard cheeses and cooked soft cheese are fine because hard cheese has too little moisture, and cooking kills any bacteria present.
- Unpasteurised milk and dairy — pasteurisation is specifically designed to eliminate Listeria and other pathogens; unpasteurised products skip that step.
- Cold deli and cured meats — not cooked at high heat during production, so any contamination isn’t eliminated the way it would be in a fully cooked product.
- Pre-packed salads and sprouted seeds — moist, ready-to-eat, and can sit in refrigerated supply chains for some time before reaching your plate.
- Refrigerated pâté and smoked fish — similarly ready-to-eat and stored cold for extended periods.
Practical Steps That Reduce Risk
- Cook chilled ready meals until steaming hot all the way through, rather than eating them lukewarm.
- Respect use-by dates strictly on ready-to-eat refrigerated foods — Listeria risk increases the longer food has been stored, even within date.
- Keep your fridge at or below 5°C, and don’t overload it in a way that reduces airflow and even cooling.
- Wash raw vegetables and salad thoroughly, even pre-washed bagged salad, to reduce the starting bacterial load.

Actual listeriosis cases in pregnancy are genuinely rare — this is a case where the caution in the guidance is deliberately generous relative to the statistical risk, precisely because the consequences can be severe. Following the standard precautions consistently, rather than worrying about every meal individually, is the most sane and sustainable way to manage this risk through pregnancy.
